A diachronic account of phonological unnaturalness

چکیده
2. Norwegian retroflexion • In Standard Norwegian (= ‘Urban East Norwegian’), morpheme initial laminal alveolars / t ̻d ̻n̻ s ̻ / become apical postalveolars (=‘retroflex’) [ ʈ ɖ ɳ ʂ ] when directly preceded by the apical alveolar / ɾ /, which itself deletes: (1) / bɑːɾ / ‘bare-ADJ’ + / -t ̻/ ‘ADJ-N’ → [ bɑːʈ ] / tɑ̻ːɾ / ‘take-PRES’ + / -də̻ / ‘it’ → [ tɑ̻ːɖə ] / tɑ̻ːɾ / ‘take-PRES’ + / -n̻ / ‘he’ → [ tɑ̻ːɳ ] / tɑ̻ːɾ / ‘take-PRES’ + / -sæ̻ / ‘REFL’ → [ tɑ̻ːʂæ ] • A puzzling aspect of this process is that two alveolars in the input give a postalveolar in the output (Endresen 1974): / alveolar / + / alveolar / → [ postalveolar ]

Title : Mimetic gemination in Japanese : A challenge for Evolutionary Phonology
Blevins’s Evolutionary Phonology attempts to derive most if not all synchronic phonological patterns from diachronic changes: “[R]ecurrent synchronic sound patterns are a direct reflection of their diachronic origins, and, more specifically...regular phonetically based sound change is the common source of recurrent sound patterns. Evolutionary Phonology...investigates this hypothesis and explor...
متن کاملA Diachronic Analysis of Compound Truncation in Japanese Fashion Magazines
The aim of this study is to analyze Japanese truncation formation from a phonological viewpoint. A full year’s data at an interval of 10 years were collected from fashion magazines aimed for the younger generation. A detailed analysis has indicated that although the unmarked four-morae output is still dominant throughout, a subtle diachronic change can be observed during the 20 years, especiall...
متن کاملDiachronic evidence for the synchronic grammar: The case of long-distance liquid metathesis
Recurrent sound patterns in the synchronic phonological typology often find analogs in diachronic development, and thus any account of this typology must include a set of explanatory principles to account for their existence over others in both domains. While most accounts acknowledge the importance of substantive phonetic factors such as articulatory ease and perceptual robustness, there is di...
متن کاملNatural Phonological Processes in Sistani Persian of Iran
This article provides an overview of natural phonological processes in the dialect of Sistani Persian spoken in Iranian Sistan, and reviews theoretical implications of these processes. A representative selection of processes in the language is examined in reference to conditioning by surrounding segments and conditioning in reference to syllable structure. While assimilation and dissimilation a...
متن کاملCompound Systems of Pretonic Vocalism after Palatalized Consonants in Russian Dialects: A Synchronic and Diachronic Analysis
The paper presents a new approach to the analysis of compound patterns of pretonic vowel neutralization after palatalized consonants in Russian dialects (the so-called DissimilativeAttenuated and Attenuated-Dissimilative systems). The approach takes into account both the quality of the stressed vowels and the consonantal environment in the positions before vowels of different heights. In additi...
